AIRPORT AUTHORITY MEETING: The Albany County Airport Authority will hold an Audit Committee meeting on Monday, August 7, 2023 at 9:45 am. The meeting will be held in the Conference Room in the 3rd Floor Conference Room located in the Main Terminal at the Albany International Airport, Albany.

SYCAWAY SENIORS: Need a diversion in your life? Food, fun and friends await you. Bring a friend or neighbor to the Sycaway Seniors group. Members live all over Rensselaer County, not just Sycaway. We meet the first and third Mondays each month at 18 Keyes Lane, at the Brunswick Community Center from noon to 3 p.m. Bring your own lunch. We supply dessert and drinks. PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING: August 8 from 2-4pm, at the Cohoes Senior Center. Over the next 5 months, The City of Cohoes needs your input and participation in developing the future of downtown Cohoes. The meeting is open to the public, and will cover engagement updates, revitalization strategies, and Downtown Revitalization Initiative proposed project evaluation criteria. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. STORYTELLING NIGHT: At First United Methodist Church, 1 Gilligan Rd. East Greenbush, 7pm. The community is invited to our free storytelling event. The all-female Irish band Triskele will be talking about their history and playing a few songs . This event will be outside weather permitted, please bring a lawn chair . We will be inside if it rains.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM: Wednesdays, July 26 – August 9, 12:00 – 1:30 pm, In-person at the Connections to Care Family Opportunity Center, 31 Walter St., Albany. The Strengthening Families Program is a three-week interactive series of workshops that allow parents/caregivers to spend special time with their youth and help them be successful. During each session, parents/caregivers and their youth will learn ways to build on existing strengths, improve communications skills, and have fun together as a family. Lunch is provided each day and families will win a family game night gift bag for attending all three days! Advanced registration is required by July 21 by email at [email protected]. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. BINGO: Rensselaer Elks Lodge #2073, located at 683 Columbia Turnpike, hosts Bingo every Thursday evening and the general public is welcome to attend. Doors open at 5 PM for players age 18+. Play starts at 7 PM. $1,300 in prizes. Food and refreshments sold.

NATURE ART HOURS: Starting on Thursday July 6, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be hosting weekly Nature Arts Hours under the pavilion at Camp Saratoga on Scout Road. Nature Arts Hours are scheduled for every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 am through August 10 and are geared for children of all ages. Each Thursday will feature a different and creative nature-themed arts project. Activities will include sun prints, natural tie dye, seed medallions and more! (Please check wiltonpreserve.org for the specific craft for each week.) There is a craft supply fee of $3 per participant. Participants can park in Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road directly across the street from the pavilion. Registration is required as space is limited. We meet in the Nature Center where we begin by reading a nature-themed book or two and then take a short walk together outdoors, keeping our eyes open for animal tracks, shells, feathers, and other signs of the natural world around us. STORYTIME LEARN & PLAY: Fridays at 9 a.m. at the Lansingburgh Branch of the Troy Public Library, located at 27 114th St., Troy. We will share stories, songs, movements and more! Masks are optional but are not required. For children ages 0-5 with a caregiver. Registration is not necessary. Please note: this program occurs before the library opens for the day. Please enter through the side door on 4th Avenue.

WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 605 Old Saratoga Road, Gansevoort. 9:30 am. Wiggly Wanderers has officially been around for 1 year! This is an ongoing weekly program that is toddler focused. We welcome all family members but please understand the toddlers are in charge of this one. We wander, we roll over logs, we explore toads and worms and leaves. Strollers do not work with this program but baby wearing is very welcome. Please pack a change of clothes for the car, the wigglers often end up wet, dirty and tired. This program costs $1 per toddler, which helps us feed the nature center animals. No registration is required, please meet at the nature center. We start walking at 9:35am.

TINSMITH DEMONSTRATION: At the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater. 10 am to 4 pm. At the time of the Battles of Saratoga, the tinsmith was an important part of both community and military life. Tinsmiths created dozens of useful items like cups, bowls, candle molds, lanterns, tea canisters, and other containers. They also provided armies with needed items such as oil flasks, canteens, document cases, cooking kettles, and even canister shot for artillery. Learn about the process and see a sampling of the many civilian and military wares a tinsmith could make. The tinsmith demonstration is weather sensitive and will be canceled in the event of rain.

HERMAN MELVILLE’S BIRTHDAY: The Lansingburgh Historical Society, will be celebrating Herman Melville’s 205th Birthday on August 12 at the Herman Melville House located at 2 114th St., Troy. Richard Matorro will be the guest speaker. The talk is titled “Herman Melville: “When in Doubt, Speculate”. He will also read from his book about Melville meeting Hawthorne while hiking up Monument Mountain. Mr. Matarro will begin his talk at 10:30 am. The House, including the room Herman penned “Omoo” and “Typee”, will be open for tours from noon to 2 pm. Birthday cupcakes will be served following the talk. A $10 donation is always appreciated.

CARDBOARD BOAT RACES: Hudson Crossing Park’s 17th Annual Cardboard Boat Races are at Fort Hardy Park on Route 29 in Schuylerville, from 8am to 3pm. Admission is free for spectators. On-site registration and cardboard boat construction are open from 8 to 11 am, and the first race launches at 1pm. Rules, registration forms and hints to get started with boat building are available at www.hudsoncrossingpark.org. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Champlain Canal, participants are invited to design boats with this year’s theme in mind: Magical History Tour! Racers may construct their boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event where materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee.There will awards after each race: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for speed, the Titanic Award, Most Enthusiastic Crew, Judges Bribe Award (“Bribes” are considered donations to Hudson Crossing Park), People’s Choice, Overall Best in Show, and Most Sailors Left Afloat! Enjoy the festivities with food, live music by the Zucchini Brothers, and lots of cardboard construction! Environmental education activities, canal trivia, and terrific photo opportunities will round out a fun-filled day for all. Individuals, families, groups, businesses, and school teams are all encouraged to race. In case of inclement weather or unsafe sailing conditions this event will not be held.

METEOR SHOWER WATCH PARTY: At the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater. 9:30 pm. Join us for a night under the stars on the Visitor Center Lawn during a peak night of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Ranger Kristin will give a short presentation about our connections to the night sky, the majesty of meteor showers, a night sky tour, and how you can help to protect this disappearing resource. After the presentation, attendees will have time to watch the night sky for meteors. Under favorable night sky conditions, it is estimated that you can see around 100 meteors per hour. Although we do have light pollution here, if the weather cooperates, we are hoping for a good show! Limited space is available. CABOOSE DAY: 13th Annual Caboose Day and Car Show At King’s Station, sponsored by the Town of Greenfield Historical Society. August 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include tours of King’s Station and Caboose Corner of Route 9N and Porter Road in Porter Corners; and a Car Show featuring Trucks, Motorcycles and Imports. Vendors will include a bake sale, souvenir t-shirts, hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, soda and water. Proceeds to benefit the Town of Greenfield Historical Society. Ride the train from Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway 9 Railroad Place, Corinth to Kings Station. The train will drop off and pick up 2 times. CAR WASH: 4th Annual Car Wash to benefit the Stephentown Historical Society. Sunday, August 13, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, New Scrub Board Laundromat and Car Wash, 15808 NY Route 22, Stephentown. The event includes the Stephentown Federated Church’s Garden and Bake Sale. Rain date is Sunday, August 20.

WALKING TOUR: Hosted by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. Tours are limited to 30 participants each and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tours tend to sell out quickly, so participants are advised to purchase tickets early at www.saratogapreservation.org. Cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. All tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. August 13: “Greenridge Cemetery and the Civil War.” Join Gloria May for a tour of Greenridge Cemetery. MIXOLOGY CLASS: At the Troy Public Library, 6-7pm. Join the Library and local bartender (and lecturer) William Oshei for a history of elixirs, beverages, and cocktails, tips and tricks for the home bartender, and a mocktail demonstration and taste test. Topics will include: the history of cocktail making, including medicinal purposes, pre-prohibition-era drink making, tiki & modern cocktail revival; the tools and equipment you need for home cocktail making; how to choose the right glass for your cocktail; flavor balancing theory; and the dos and don’ts of mixing alcohol with other ingredients. NATURE ON THE MOVE: At Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, 80 Scout Road, Wilton. 10:30am. These walks give participants an opportunity to get out on the trails with like-minded people. They are geared towards gentle exercise and the enjoyment of nature, and are appropriate for adults at basic fitness levels. The group usually covers about 1.5 miles. Nature on the Move happens every other week, year-round. The August 14 walk will be led by long-time volunteer and fitness guru, Linda Hovious on the trails of the Fox Parcel. LEARN TO CROCHET: Are you interested in learning how to crochet but don’t know where to start? Have you picked up the craft in the past but never finished a project? If so, this is the perfect class for you. In this four-part workshop series, master crocheter Sonya Ward will teach participants the basics of crochet and help them make “Elizabeth Stitch Fingerless Gloves” as a final project. All materials will be provided. Participants will walk away understanding the basics of crochet, as well as a finished project to wear and enjoy. LEARN TO MEND CLOTHES: At the Lansingburgh branch of the Troy Public Library, 2-3pm. If you struggle sewing on lost buttons or mending rips in your clothes, this workshop will give you all the instruction you need to maintain your wardrobe. We are pleased to be working with Sarah, owner of the Troy Sew Shop, who will offer instruction and guidance on all your mending questions. SNEAKERFEST FUNDRAISER: The Saratoga Winery and the Saratoga County Children’s Committee (SCCC) are holding a fundraising event called Sneakerfest to benefit the SCCC’s back to school program. The organizations will collaborate with local businesses iRun LOCAL and Allo Saratoga to provide sneakers for children as they prepare to return to school in September. Team up with a friend or family member (or come solo). Kits with supplies will be available for pickup at the library the week before the program. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. LEARN TO PAINT WITH WATERCOLOR: Join the library for a series of watercolor workshops where participants will work on seasonal landscapes under the direction of local artist Emma Rinaldi. We will be starting with a flower field, moving on to a sunny mountainscape, and finishing with an ocean view. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. BINGO: Rensselaer Elks Lodge #2073, located at 683 Columbia Turnpike, hosts Bingo every Thursday evening and the general public is welcome to attend. Doors open at 5 PM for players age 18+. Play starts at 7 PM. $1,300 in prizes. Food and refreshments sold.

CARING TOGETHER 22ND ANNUAL 5K RACE, 1 MILE WALK FOR OVARIAN CANCER: CARING TOGETHER NY will hold our 22nd annual Teal Ribbon 5K run and 1 Mile Walk at Washington Park Albany, New York (start and finish at the Lake House) on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at 9 a.m. Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecological cancer and the fifth most deadly cancer for women. There is currently no early detection test for Ovarian Cancer. The symptoms are often subtle, persistent and usually increase over time. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 a.m. on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available.
